Carmel's Oldest Italian Restaurant

While the longevity of many restaurants
is measured in months or a few years, one restaurant in Carmel has
passed through generations of a family like heirloom jewelry.
Paolina and Tom Aliotti of Carmel just celebrated 60 years of
marriage.
It began with Paolina's own recipes for fresh pizza
and spicy sausage sandwiches served from a booth at the Monterey
County Fair - a favorite among locals. But loyal followers could
only get them once a year.

Il Palazzo Guazzesi,
seicentesco, acquistato nell"800 dalla famiglia Aliotti e oggi
sede del Circolo Artistico di Arezzo, ha sulla facciata il busto
seicentesco di un Guazzesi. Notevole anche la ringhiera
settecentesca in ferro battuto.
Sulla prima rampa di scale,
all'interno, può essere ammirato un tabernacolo affrescato da
Parri di Spinello(1387-1453) per un edificio evidentemente
preesistente e di diversa struttura.
Al piano terra,
attraverso la prima sala e, espositiva della zona mostre, si può
accedere ad un originale teatrino in metallo, raro esempio, in
Arezzo, di un ambiente per spettacoli creato all'interno di un
palazzo privato.

Santa Margherita a Cancelli fu
costruita, come piccolo oratorio, nel XIII secolo e sostituì
lentamente la chiesa di Santa Lucia del castello di Fondoli che
stava perdendo, con il venire meno dell’insediamento fortificato,
la sua importanza accentratrice.
Esisteva già nel 1260, quando
è ricordata con il suo popolo nel Libro di Montaperti; contribuì
insieme con Santa Lucia all’approvvigionamento di grano di
Montalcino per sette staia. Lo stesso documento ci informa che il
prete Boninsegna, custode della chiesa, era anche il primo
cappellano di Cascia. Si pensa che a questo periodo risalga
l’affermazione di Santa Margherita a Cancelli a scapito della
chiesa di Fondoli. E’ ricordata nelle Decime del 1274-75 e del
1301-3.
Nel 1330 era patronato dei Bardi, per concessione del
vescovo Tedice Aliotti, e nel 1343 il popolo di Santa Margherita
era il più numeroso del piviere (FIUMI).

decide la costruzione di un ospedale. Un canonico lascia per
testamento un' importante donazione e indica che se un vescovo
avesse tentato di impossessarsi dei beni, questi avrebbero dovuto
essere venduti ed i soldi ricavati regalati ai poveri. L'ospedale
fu costruito fra il battistero ed il duomo. Fu demolito nel 1298,
su disposizione dell'arte della Lana e dei capi-operai di
S.Reparata.
Per evitare alienazioni di beni in periodi di sede
vacante, per morte del vescovo, viene istituita la carica dei
Vicesdomini laici, rettori del vescovado in attesa della nomina
del nuovo vescovo. La carica fu ricoperta per generazioni da
membri della famiglia Visdomini, che possedeva case dove ora sorge
il Duomo. Un discendente dei Visdomini ebbe il soprannome "della
Tosa", da cui nacque la casata dei Della Tosa e poi Tosinghi. Un
altro ramo prese il cognome Aliotti.

The villa of Collina. This very beautiful villa, greatly elevated
on an embankment which is sustained by bastions, was built in the
first half of the 16th century by Salviati family; since the 19th
century Ginori Lisci family is the owner. A bridge links the park
of the villa to the Oratory of Visitation, which preserves its
decoration of the 16th century. The great barrel vault is frescoed
with tondi portraying episodes of Saint John the Baptist's life,
patron of the Salviati family. The painting supported with a
centre to the altar with the Visitation is a replica with few
changes of Michele delle Colombe's paintings, which are in the
Basil of Santa Maria delle Carceri in Prato city. Not far away
from the villa, is the twelfth-century tower, belonging originally
to Aliotti's family but during the 16th century, passing into the
hands of the Salviati family. Walking down the street which from
Collina goes to Barberino, there is the so called La Torraccia, a
very beautiful place, having preserved its 14th century structure.
